Origin

The Dachshunds origins can be traced as far back as the 15th century. Some experts think that the Dachshund dates back to antiquity and was depicted in Egyptian Reliefs. While that may be true, it is widely accepted that Germans were largely responsible for the developement of the dog we know today. Their unique shape was developed to hunt badgers. "Dachshund" Translated means "Badger Hound." Back in those days, hunters would use the Dachshund to keep the number of badgers in check. Hunters today use the Dachshund in a variety of settings.

His distinctive build makes him ideal for digging, entering tunnels and fighting badgers. Standard size Dachshund was developed to hunt badgers and other burrow dwelling animals, while the miniature Dachshund was bred to hunt smaller animals, such as rabbits.

Because of their long, narrow bodies, they are often nicknamed weiner dog or sausage dog.
